Sprint Kart Racer Hayes takes out October Sports Star Award

4th December 2009

Mildura Kart Club member Malcolm Hayes has been announced as the October Harvey Norman 3MAFM Northern Mallee Sports Star, following a stellar month behind the wheel of his sprint kart.

Malcolm started racing karts approximately 4 years ago in Darwin. He moved to Sunraysia shortly after with his employment and joined the local Mildura Kart Club to continue his new sport.

Mal is a dealer for SQ Racing in Mildura and was invited to compete in the CIK World Karting Championships held in Macau near Hong Kong. Malcolm competed in the SQ Racing 125cc Cheetah class event - a special event for veteran drivers from all over the world. The world championships were broadcast live to millions of people around the world.

All the participants in Malcolm’s race had karts that were designed to be identical. So with everything equal, this then allowed the drivers’ skills to be the difference in the race. Malcolm lacked practice due to blowing up an engine before the event but in the race that counted for nothing as he lead the field home.

Malcolm has raced in the Master Games in Adelaide and was in the top placings as well as travelling throughout Victoria. Malcolm has come a long way in such a short period of time in karting - to achieve a world title in this short time is a major accomplishment.

Malcolm receives a voucher proudly sponsored by Sportspower and is now eligible for the 2009 Harvey Norman 3MA FM Sports Star Of The Year Award...... Congratulations Malcolm.
