Phil Lamattina takes out June Sports Star honours

Mallee Sports Assembly has announced Phil Lammattina as the Harvey Norman 3MAFM Northern Mallee Sports Star for the month of June 2009. Phil has enjoyed an excellent Drag season, culminating in him becoming the Australian Champion in the ANDRA Top Fuel Championships during June.

ANDRA restricts their field to the top 8 with as many as 15 competing for qualification. This championship is an 8 round series held across Australia, commencing in September 2008 and culminating in Sydney in June 2009 at the largest drag racing meet outside America.

The 1st round of the Australian Championship was held in Sydney after rain affected this competition; all qualifiers left the round on the same number of points. The 2nd round was held in Queensland where Phil went through to the semi finals. The 3rd round was held in Perth where Phil won the round. At this championship Phil became the fastest dragracer outside the United States with a pass of 4.591 seconds which equates to 333mph/536kmh over a quarter mile (400 metres). In the 4th round he went through to the semis in Sydney, 5th round back to Queensland and won that round. The 6th round was held in Sydney which was rained out. The 7th round he was knocked out. In the final round Phil went in with an unbeatable 100 point lead and ended the round with 135 points to his nearest rival. With 3 round wins being 50% of the eligible series and the other rounds won by individuals Phil was declared the Australian Champion.

To win this championship so convincingly is a credit to Phil as this is only his 2nd year as a driver. During Phil’s 1st year he crashed and at the end of the season the team met and decided the next season they would not accept any excuses and worked as a team to fulfil their championship win this year. The team’s major sponsor of 6 seasons has announced their continued sponsorship and is so happy with the outcome that they have increased their support.
