Sports Trainer Course in Mildura

Mallee Sports Assembly and Sports Medicine Australia are coordinating a Level 1 Sports Trainer Course to be held on the 25th March and 1st April 2012, South Mildura Football Club Rooms. This course is open to any person who wants to become an accredited sports trainer. It provides skills on how to prevent and manage injuries on and off the sporting field. Topics covered include: Preventing sports injuries; principles of injury management; sports tapping; sports nutrition; transporting the injured athlete; common sporting illness, injuries and medical conditions. National accreditation from this 16 hour course is the standard requirement to work as a sports trainer in many of the country’s sporting codes. The only pre-requisite required is to have a current first aid certificate. Successful completion of the Level 1 Sports Trainer course provides an opportunity for participants to become an SMA National accredited Sports Trainer. The cost of this course is $185. Re-Accreditation Course will also be provided, on the 1st April, at South Mildura Football Club Rooms. Cost is $95. All Abilities Social Tennis Program

Mildura Lawn Tennis Club will be conducting a social tennis program for people with disabilities on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm. Everyone is welcome to come and join the program which will recommence on the 15th February until the end of March. If you are not a member of Mildura Lawn Tennis Club, it will be $6 to play each week. For Club members it is a free program.

Country Action Grant Scheme now open!

The Country Action Grant Scheme is currently open for application and closes on 1 March. Funding up to $5000 is available for sporting groups to use for projects which will increase the skills of coaches, officials and managers, increase club operational capacity and improve accessibility to sport and recreation in rural and regional areas.

Medibank Community Grants Now Available

The Medibank Community Fund Grants are now open for projects which encourage people of all ages to live longer and in good health by staying mentally and physically active. Grants will be awarded to the initiatives which best promote healthy eating and community connectedness. Applications close at 12.00pm AEST on February 17 2012 and successful applicants will be announced by 1st May 2012

Mildura Disability Awareness Program 2011

Directed at primary school students, the program aims to explore opportunities which will increase disability awareness as a means of reducing the stigma, enhance inclusion and encourage participation.

Government announces sports injury prevention taskforce

A Sports Injury Prevention Taskforce has recently been established with the aim of reducing the level of sports injuries in grassroots sports. Devised with the aim of increasing the use of injury prevention strategies, reducing the number of sports related injury and increasing participation rates, the taskforce is an initiative of the Victorian Government and is supported by leading organisations, including Sports Medicine Australia, VicHealth and Vicsport, and prominent academics in the sports injury field.

The Mallee Sports Assembly 2010 2011 Annual General Meeting

The Mallee Sports Assembly (MSA) Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 18th October in the Mildura Settlers Cricket Clubrooms. As part of the AGM the new committee of management for the 2011/12 year was elected. Guest Speaker for the night was Steve Burton; Chairperson of the fledgling organization, Active Broken Hill Inc. who spoke about their experiences establishing a similar group to the Mallee Sports Assembly in Broken Hill.

BARRY BAILEY OF THE KERANG BOWLING CLUB RETURNS TO THE GREENS AFTER A STROKE

The Victorian Department of Health Wellbeing Plan 2011-2015 addressing injury prevention in sport

The Victorian Department of Health has recently released its Wellbeing Plan 2011-2015. The plan aims to improve the health and wellbeing of all Victorians by engaging communities in preventative measures, and by strengthening systems for health protection and promotion across all government sectors. Sports Medicine Australia – Victorian Branch (SMA-VIC’) welcomes the new plan which addresses sports related injury prevention and identifies further opportunities for progress towards safer environments. The Smartplay program, one of SMA-VIC’s key programs, aims to reduce the incidence and frequency of sport and recreation injuries. IS YOUR CLUB UP TO DATE WITH ITS INCORPORATION REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES??

REMINDER! DONT BE COMPLACIENT!! It has recently been brought to our attention that a number of Sporting Clubs and Associations are not up to date with their Incorporation reporting and run the risk of being deregistered. All clubs must submit an annual return statement and pay the associated fees on a yearly basis in order to remain incorporated and to protect your club, committee and members against liability.

Victorian Code of Conduct for Community Sport document made available to Mallee clubs

A Code of Conduct for Community Sporting organisations has been released across Victoria, and the MSA has received a copy to make available to all recreation bodies across the region. The Victorian Code of Conduct for Community Sport outlines behaviourrs which are expected to be followed by every person invovled in community sport, as well as identifying the behaviours which must not be tolerated.
