Charlton Lawn Bowls for people with a Disability proves a success

MSA Wycheproof, together with Buloke Shire Council, is introducing people in the Charlton area with a disability to the fun and recreational exercise of Lawn Bowls as part of a current program being run through the MSA. MSA's Wycheproof Project Officer Rhonda Allan has submitted the attached report, complete with photos, as to how the program is going so far.

Week 3 of Birchip Active Youth Program

Year 9 students took part in a day of water skiing at Lake Tchum last week, as the program entered its third week. Lake Tchum has only recently been refilled, and a perfect still day made the water like ice for this activity for the students. Birchip Active Youth Program continues

Year 9 students at Birchip P-12 College attended their second week of Active Youth activities last week, partaking in sessions where they made home-made pasta with the assistance of Wycheproof resident Nuccia McLean, and learnt about healthy eating choices from Bendigo Rural Health dietician Nerida Deans. Working with Children Checks Info Sessions scheduled for Mildura

As you are probably aware, the Working with Children Act 2005 requires that people who work or volunteer in certain child-related work apply for, and pass, a WWC Check. Club Management, Lawn Bowls & Koori Community Day in Buloke & Gannawarra

MSA Wycheproof is busily arranging a number of information sessions and programs at the moment, scheduled for coming weeks and months. Club Management sessions are scheduled for Kerang in April & May, while Lawn Bowls programs are scheduled for Charlton starting on 23 February and Kerang starting 9 March. A Koori Community Day is to take place at the Kerang Aboriginal Community Centre on 1 April from 12 noon.

Active Youth Program commences at Birchip

MSA Wycheproof, in conjunction with Birchip P-12 College, have recently commenced the Active Youth Program for 2010, targeting all Year 9 students at the school. The program is to be undertaken over 6 weeks, and has been designed based on information collected from the students - Rhonda from MSA Wycheproof visited the school early in February to brainstorm and survey the students to find out what THEY wanted for their sessions and workshops.

Responsible Serving of Alcohol and Food Handlers Courses coming up

The Mallee Sports Assembly in conjunction with the Good Sports Program will be conducting a Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) and is seeking expressions of interest for a Food Handling Course. Sporting Clubs play important roles in our local community and Mallee Sports Assembly have recognised there is a need for ongoing education and training opportunities that help lift the standard of clubs. As such we are offering Responsible Serving of Alcohol courses and Food Handling Courses at a minimal cost.

International Day for People With a Disability celebrated at Cohuna Recreation Reserve

Thanks to funding from Rural Access, Small Community Grants-Gannawarra Shire Council, celebrations for Int day for PWD 2009 were conducted at the Cohuna recreation Reserve, Cohuna on Sunday 7th February 2010. It was also supported by the Mallee Sports Assembly and International Day for People of a Disability (who kindly donated recycle bags, balloons, stickers, temporary tattoos, pens, friendship bands). We thank this organization for their annual support of this celebrated event.

Waters takes out consecutive Sports Star Awards at Gala Presentation

JOSH WATERS was the centre of attention late Friday night at the 2009 Harvey Norman 3MAFM Northern Mallee Sports Star Awards Gala Presentation Dinner, after he took out the PETER MANOLAS TROPHY for the second year in a row. Josh was announced the 2009 Sports Star of the Year by Greg Duggan of Harvey Norman and Rod Simms of Radio 3MAFM, and presented his trophy by Australian Olympic Swimmer NICOLE LIVINGSTONE O.A.M.

Waters takes out final Sports Star monthly award for 09

Josh Waters has enjoyed another stellar year with his motorcycling since being named 2008 Harvey Norman 3MAFM Sports Star of the Year in February last year. Josh moved to Superbike Racing for 2009 and won the Australian Superbike Championship. The superior class of superbike racing did not deter Josh where he smashed lap records on his way to his Championship win in his rookie year. With the 6 rounds of racing contested, throughout Australia and with consistent racing Josh placed with 2 first, 3 2nds and one 3rd giving him enough points to win the Australian Superbike Championship.

Soccer player Chris Romeo named November Sports Star

Chris Romeo has been selected in the Australian Football Skool’s (AFS) Under 19 squad. Early this year (2010), Chris and the Australian Squad will travel to London for training with elite coaches, players from Arsenal and Fulham Football Club and then travel onto Barcelona to play in the International Youth Tournament.

Coomy Tri Club to hold Kids event in Merbein

The Coomealla Triathlon Club have scheduled a kids triathlon event, to be held on Sunday 21 February, commencing at 9am. 2010 starts with a rush at the MSA Wyche office

The new year has started busily for Rhonda at MSA Wycheproof office. International Day for PWD celebrations are scheduled for Cohuna on Sunday Feb7 at the Cohuna Recreation Reserve from 6pm onwards. This night will include fun activities, Petanque, live music, BBQ meal and more (Register for catering purposes with Rhonda at Wyche). In addition, the 'Active Youth' program is scheduled to commence for all Yr 9 students at Birchip P-12 in mid-February.

In particular, MSA is looking for nominations for the January monthly Sports Star Award, with nominations for this award closing at 4pm on Friday 12 February. Mallee Sports Assembly confirms that all nominations for the 2009 Harvey Norman 3MAFM Northern Mallee Sports Star Awards are now closed. Nominations are currently being collated and forwarded to the Selection Panel for winners in each category to be selected. Winners are to be announced at a Gala Presentation Dinner on February 5 at Club DaVinci.

Wycheproof IDPWD celebrations a winner

Rhonda Allan of the Mallee Sports Assembly-Wycheproof conducted an activity morning for something a little different for the clients of the Wycheproof Day Centre, East Wimmera Health Service. Gloria Tomlins co-ordinator of the centre welcomed Rhonda before the group joined in for the old bowls game of Petanque outside on the very green lawn from all the untimely rain we have just received. There were some very close shots but Celie Ison was the final winner who just pipped Sylvie Allan right at the end of the game.

Sunraysia Softball to host SA Junior Champioships

Set to run from Friday 12 February with twilight matches, continuing through Saturday and concluding on the afternoon of Sunday 14 February, the competition is set to bring together boys and girls Under 14, 16 and 19 teams from 10 regions across South Australia.

Representatives from the club were in attendance at the presentation function, and were joined by MSA Good Sports Project Officer Jeanette Worthington, and they were pleased to accept the award on behalf of the club.

Don Falvo attracts September Sports Star Award

Don Falvo has been awarded the September 'Harvey Norman 3MAFM Northern Mallee Sports Star Award', following an excellent season playing football for Robinvale Football Netball Club. To top it off, Don has become the games record holder for the Sunraysia Football League with 313 games, while also taking out the award for Best & Fairest for the club for the ninth time in his career.

July Sports Star awarded to Walpeup Dirt Karter Robert Latta

Robert Latta has had a very successful year in Dirt Kart Racing. Robert has been travelling the length and breadth of Australia competing in all the Dirt Kart state titles as well as the Australian titles. He successfully won state titles in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia as well as the Australian title in Queensland. The only state title that eluded him was the Tasmanian title in which he was a late entry thus starting at the rear of the field.

Matt Austin earns May Sports Star Award for Baseball success

20 year old Matt Austin has been playing representative Baseball since the age of 11. Matt, who plays locally with the Eagles Baseball Club, has also been representing Sunraysia, Victoria and South Australia in Juniors and now Senior baseball. This continued success has earned him the Northern Mallee Sports Star Award for May 2009.

Brad going places as he picks up March Sports Star Award

Brad Mason is a volleyballer going places. Brad has only been playing volleyball for 3½ years and in 2007 he was identified by the Australian Institute of Sport Volleyball coaching staff for consideration into the Australian Junior Boys Team. Brad is a member of the Victorian State team and has also been selected as Vice Captain.

Mollies meteoric rise earns her February Sports Star Award

Mollie McKendrick has had a meteoric rise in basketball. Mollie started her basketball in the Red Cliffs competition and last year joined Demons Basketball Club with their U16 team in the Mildura Basketball Association.
